Jan-Feb roundup

Kattalyzed - Laiya Jan 2011

Oooh, sandbars.

There’s no way I can completely sum up what happened from December 27 (last blog post) to this day, but photos are always willing to lend a hand. Besides, words are more prone to the nasty mediation of feelings — happy, harsh, and in between.

So, there was Laiya on New Year’s Day with its gray skies, huge families, and celebratory meals. J had an overnight van rental service, and I was able to meet his two awesome friends. We traversed two expressways (with their hefty toll rates, so hefty you have the urge to deflate your own tire), night-swam, managed a modest helping of sauteed shrimp, enjoyed sleep on the way back to Manila, and didn’t think of work until I stepped into my mother’s house. It was a great start: having a healthy taste of sunlight and the beach, traveling, and having even just a semblance of work-life balance. Before sleeping that night in our nipa hut, I mouthed a little prayer of hope and thanks.

The company trip to Boracay, which had pretty much turned ritualistic. The bunch was bigger this time, and it included the two bosses, Steve and Thi, and Pinas first-timers Linh and Dale. We had fun games on the first day, but the real deal — called the MCS Amazing Race — happened on the second day. Armed with zero exercise, I ran on the shore, endured the nasty midday sun, and helped the team solve puzzles and and win clues. Friends and I drank vodka in our room, orchestrated photo shoots with TGIS barkada as the peg (hah), rode ATVs, and took endless walks with hopes of finding a decent billiards place (we didn’t find one). My 5th time on the famous island paradise.

Dated my J on Feb 14th and failed with my Suck It, Commercialism plans. 127 Hours after lunch, and it must be the three sleepless nights — we were at the department store and I was, “What movie did we watch again?” At any rate, James Franco was yummeeeh.

J was practical enough to ask me if I want flowers. When I said no, he offered to buy me clothes. I took advantage and brought him to Terranova, where the fall/winter collection was on sale. Got myself a nice cardi and knit skirt.

It’ll be HK/Macau in ten or so days, and SG six months after. I’m looking forward to seeing A on the latter trip!

On the reading front, I’ve managed to engage in only four to five books so far. David Sedaris is funny as hell in Holidays on Ice: Stories, and I’m not sure if it’s a good thing that I feel like reading essays in a collection. After tons of weekends and nights of dozing off, I’m also able to finish Garcia Marquez’s Love in the Time of Cholera. Many parts of the novel have blown me away, but it’s the ending that comes out the strongest. My pile is rising by the minute (and they seem to start growing hairs and claws), but I’m taking my sweet time.

E and R getting married (to different partners) in April, G seven weeks on the way. Can’t wait to see G’s baby bump! Looks like everyone’s having a blast falling in love and settling down this year — even many of 2010′s singletons are now a happy part of a pair. 2011 must have that magic touch. :)
